What inspires you?

I am inspired by the women I meet every day while working in my store. Women love to talk and share stories, and this is the stuff that inspires me - cancer survivors, widows, women in their 90s with all their wisdom, new mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends, and everything in between. I have the benefit of chatting and engaging with some of the best humans around. This inspires me to be a better mother, friend, wife, and woman.

How long have you been in business on Jetty Road?

21 years this year (Attitudes has been trading for 31).

What do you love about being a woman in business?

In my early days as a new mum, I felt guilty about working. Over time, I realized I was not alone and that I became a better mother by working - yes, tired sometimes but happier because I was also nourishing my soul by surrounding myself with other women. With free parenting advice! Being a woman in business allowed me not only to challenge myself but also to find safety with other women/mums in business - I was not alone.

How cool was Iris Apfel just being herself? Not worried about social norms or expectations - this is what I look up to. Beauty is being comfortable in your skin. I love that.

What is one piece of advice you would give other women?

Give them something to talk about - they're gonna talk about you anyway!

What inspires you?

My clients inspire me daily; I work with women who are feeling fatigued and exhausted, yet their commitment to themselves is inspiring. Watching them reach a point where they know something needs to change and then put themselves higher on the priority list and then reach for their health goals is truly inspiring. It takes courage and strength for these women to create new boundaries, be open to learning what their bodies need, and then take action to put the steps in place.

Seeing the next generation of women enjoy the freedom to make career choices and build on the hard-won gains that have been made for women in the workforce over the past 40-plus years! What is a female-led business that you admire? Or a female you look up to?

I was always in awe of Anita Roddick. She was the founder of The Body Shop, with its strong ethical focus and values base which spilled over into every aspect of her life. Apart from being a very successful businesswoman, Anita was a human rights campaigner and environmentalist who was not afraid to take on any organisation at the top level if they were not doing the “right” thing or to put herself at considerable personal risk to fight for the rights of the disadvantaged in our world.

As women, we create a community, and seeing that community of women feeling good about themselves inspires me. We all know that life can often feel serious, so I am for adding more fun. What is one piece of advice you would give other women?

I started my business only 4 years ago at the age of 59. I opened my business only two months before Covid hit, and the economic downturn in the last two years has been challenging, to say the least. I have listened to the feedback my customers have given me and been very open-minded to taking on suggestions from other businesswomen. My advice is - Love what you do and then be prepared to put in the hard yards!
