Meet Greg Payne, owner of Extreme Boardriders, a surf, skate, snow and ski shop. The business opened in 1995 and has been operating on Jetty Rd, Glenelg, for an incredible 30 years. Initially, the store was located in a 120 square metre shop within the East End. However, due to significant growth three years later, the decision was made to relocate to a larger premises at 118 Jetty Road, where it continues to operate to this day.
Greg, also known as Payney, is passionate about board sports and culture, which is heavily reflected in every aspect of his shop. Extreme Boardriders strives to be a leader in both products and services by offering a wide range of gear, fashion, footwear and accessories.
Over the years, Greg observed an increase in the popularity of surfing and other board sports. So, about eight years ago, they opened a new section at the back of the shop called The Boardroom. Born out of the desire to expand its key offerings, The Boardroom is a space that offers beginners, locals, and die-hard riders access to some of the best services, advice and equipment in town.
Greg loves the coastal location of their store and describes working on Jetty Rd as a unique hub. “Jetty Rd is unique because of its strip shopping. It’s got a real village sort of feel but at the beach. There is nothing else like it in South Australia, and it’s somewhat unique in Australia. I think it’s a bit of a hub on the coast here, plus it’s got public transport coming into it. That’s just some of the unique draw of Jetty Rd Glenelg,” he says.
Extreme Boardriders is a family-operated business. His wife and both his sons work there, too, creating a strong family-oriented environment. It is this warm, loving and welcoming environment that has contributed to their incredible customer loyalty and success over the years.
What he loves most about working on Jetty Rd is the great community feel and how it’s simply a one-stop shop precinct.
