The legacy and next generation of Phil Hoffmann Travel

Beyond its impressive reputation in the travel industry, Phil Hoffmann Travel has ingrained itself into the fabric of the Glenelg Community. We chat with Phil and his daughter Bianca about the past and what's next for the agency.

What have you loved about doing business on Jetty Road?

One aspect I’ve cherished is our integration into the Glenelg community and its surroundings. We’ve strived to truly embed ourselves within this vibrant community by actively sponsoring events and clubs and becoming a part of Glenelg’s fabric. We are not just about running an operation or business but rather fully immersing ourselves in the Glenelg lifestyle, whether it’s shopping, dining, or participating in community events.

You’re a Glenelg local, what do you love most about the area?

I think Glenelg is one of the nicest areas to live in Adelaide. I live on the beach, which is special in itself, but what makes it even more special is the strong sense of community within Glenelg. From our clients who have become our friends to shop owners and beyond, there is a true sense of camaraderie that truly makes Glenelg feel like home.

As a travel expert, what would you recommend to those planning to visit Jetty Road, Glenelg?

One of my recommendations for those visiting Glenelg is to catch the tram from the city to Glenelg and jump off at Brighton Road. From there, stroll down Jetty Road, pick a coffee shop or restaurant, or even eat on the beach. And of course, bring your togs to have a swim in the best sea in the world, where you may even see some dolphins.

How do you get involved with the local community?

We believe in the philosophy of ‘giving beyond self’ by supporting the local community with charitable works and sponsorship opportunities. We encourage our staff to be involved in, support, and give to charity and community-based organisations, enabling us to maintain our level of social responsibility. Our full-time staff are given two paid leave days per year to undertake volunteer or charity work in addition to fundraising charity days.

Our collaboration and support for the local community extends beyond mere sponsorship of events. We actively participate in community institutions, including the Glenelg Life Saving Club and the Glenelg Bowling Club. Our involvement is about rolling up our sleeves and getting involved in the activities and initiatives that these institutions undertake. Whether it's volunteering time, providing resources, or lending a hand in organising events, we're committed to being active participants in the community. By forging these partnerships and actively engaging with local organisations, we aim to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of the Glenelg community.

A loyal following of key staff and clients, along with preeminent supplier relationships, combined with innovation, ambition, and maintaining a strong family culture, have all been instrumental to the success of Phil Hoffmann Travel and we invite you to come and experience our expertise for yourselves.

I see continued growth for Phil Hoffmann Travel, from additional stores to our online presence. I will continue to focus and provide exceptional service in our future expansion, employing South Australians for many years to come

Fond Memories

Can you share any feelgood stories about a customer experience that has stayed with you over the years?

One of my most cherished experiences for me in all my years of travelling, is witnessing individuals, such as a 60-year-old for example, embarking on their first travel adventure. They may start with a guided tour, gradually gaining confidence as they explore new destinations. It's incredibly rewarding to see them return, eager to embark on new journeys and sometimes even venturing out solo, empowered by their newfound sense of adventure and independence.

Can you share any personal travel memories that have held a special place in your heart?

One memory that comes to mind is when we had a lady who came with us on an escorted tour to Canada & Alaska. On her first outing, she got into the car with her husband and said, ‘I’m not sure how I’m going to spend 3 weeks with these people’, and at the end of the trip, she said to me, ‘I now have 40 new friends’. Years later, she was diagnosed with cancer, fought it for eight years, and won. Her closest friends were the people from her tour. This experience encapsulates the profound and unforgettable connections forged through shared travel adventures.

5 Minute Travel Recommendations with Phil

Best Budget Travel Destinations?

When it comes to budget-friendly destinations, I would have to say Bali is one of my favourites. Its appeal lies in its versatility, by accommodating for a wide range of travellers, from families and couples to those seeking pure relaxation. Bali offers something for everyone, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious travellers looking for diverse experiences without breaking the bank.

Best Luxury Travel Destination?

I think it’s hard to pick just one! What I really love is going on a luxury cruise ship that covers a range of destinations (particularly across the Mediterranean), which allows you to return to unparalleled luxury on your ship after each excursion. There’s nothing quite like it in terms of service, food, wine, entertainment and being able to enjoy your very own suite and space. It is the ultimate blend of exploration and relaxation, creating unforgettable memories amidst the most iconic surroundings.

Your Top 5 Must Visit Destinations?

I would have to say my top 5 must visit destinations are Canada & Alaska, European River Cruising, Italy, Turkey, and Croatia & Slovenia.
